New Zealand is the only team to beat India in a T20i bilateral series. Also we couldn’t beat the Kiwis in the first 5 T20i matches. Well it’s in the past. Seeing the current team India it is possible that we could give Kiwis their biggest defeat in T20i’s.
After beating Australia, after going down in first march, the team was high in confidence . Landing just 2 days before in Auckland their was hardly any time for practice. But the team looked fully prepared fir the test ahead of them and not rusty. It was a surprise that India won the toss but not a surprise when it choose to field first. It’s win- loss record while batting first is 14-9 and while chasing is 18-4.
The Kiwis were off to a blistering start, with the likes of Martin Guptil and Colin Munro. This partnership fully capitalized the powerplay knocking the bowlers all around the park. But Shivam Dube who has been given a chance, broke the partnership. Then came in Kane Williamson, with his classy technique carried the innings. He was well supported by Ross Taylor. Soon after Williamson got dismissed it looked like New Zealand would not cross 200 mark. But the experience always comes in handy. It was shown by Taylor by making a quick fire 54 off 27 to give them a psychological advantage over India.
India’s riposte was led by a wonderfully eye-catching half-century from KL Rahul, every inch the classicist as he refused to sacrifice orthodoxy at the altar of strike-rate,and a breathtaking finish from Shreyas Iyer ,the new kid in the block. It’s not often that an innings of some proportion from Kohli is put to shade , but Rahul and Iyer managed precisely that, the former setting the tenor for the chase and the latter hastening it with a combination of poise, composure and flair under pressure on his way to the man of the match award. Having lost Rohit Sharma in the second over itself, Rahul and Kohli negated the loss with a fluent 99-run stand for the second wicket. But they both were dismissed within 6 runs of each other as India still needed 83 off 53. Iyer took it up on himself to steer the ship home. Batting with responsibility and awareness befitting a young captain of an IPL franchise,Iyer chose the right moments and balls to unfurl his aggression.
Also in the evening, Jasprit Bumrah provided further evidence of why he is considered the best white-bowler worldwide with a tidy start and an excellent spell at the death,Chahal, Dube and Jadeja were all switched on ,which made up for the profligacy of Mohammad Shami and Shardul Thakur. Without fuss.Stike one to India then.
